Firstly, please introduce yourself
I am Nancy Wang, VP of Technical Product Management at Alert Logic, a leading MDR security provider. I reside in Houston, Texas with my husband and two daughters but a bit about myself - outside of work, I enjoy travelling and cooking.
What are you looking forward to at Women in Tech Texas?
I am really looking forward to connecting with so many women in technology - it’s rare to get this kind of opportunity to meet so many other women who are in my line of business or share the same passion. So I’m looking forward to sharing my story and vision as well as learning from others.
What advice would you give to women looking to step up their career in tech?
My advice would be to always believe in yourself, do not be afraid of taking on bigger challenges or bigger opportunities. It is normal to feel nervous the first time you try to speak to a group of executives, or the first time you take on a big project that you have never taken on before. Don't be afraid of the unexpected and try the unknown - the nervousness that you feel means you are growing. It’s normal and perfectly good to feel nervous about things - it makes you pay more attention and to try harder and leads to more growth in the end.
What do you see as the biggest challenge currently facing women in technology?
In technical fields such as software development, cybersecurity or even technical product management, only about 20-25% of the workforce are female. So most often then not, we are working with a large group of men. So the common challenges to overcome for women in technology is to feel comfortable and confident enough to speak up. There is never a need to shy away from your opinions - always trust yourself and your technical instincts. Doesn’t mean you are always right, but there is absolutely no reason to shy away from stating your opinion.
With the theme of the event as Resilience, as a woman in tech, what does resilience mean to you?
As a woman in tech, resilience to me means that when you experience tough situations or tough moments, do not let the tough moments dwell on you. Your hardest times often lead to the greatest moments of your life. Keep going. Tough situations build strong people in the end.
